Tails by the Foxfire’s Top 10 Canadian-Made Games in 2026

This Canada Day, we booked ourselves a nice long weekend and lined up some video game titles that were made right here in Canada. As always when faced with a special event like this, I got incredibly ambitious tracking down relevant titles and pinned down 10 games I’ve been desperate to try (more than I could possibly tackle in a handful of days!), including a couple from my home turf in Halifax, NS:

  1. South of Midnight by Compulsion Games out of Montreal, Quebec
  2. Spiritfarer by Thunder Lotus out of Montreal, Quebec
  3. A Little to the Left by Max Inferno out of Halifax, Nova Scotia
  4. Beastieball by Wishes Unlimited out of Vancouver, British Columbia
  5. Threads of Time by Riyo Games out of Toronto, Ontario
  6. Capy Castaway by Kitten Cup Studios out of Toronto, Ontario
  7. TUNIC by TUNIC Team out of Halifax, Nova Scotia
  8. Boyfriend Dungeon by Kitfox Games out of Montreal, Quebec
  9. Kun’tewiktuk: A Mi’kmaw Adventure by Green Robot Studios out of Cape Breton Island, NS
  10. Goodbye Volcano High by KO_OP out of Montreal, Quebec

Of these, we sank our teeth into South of Midnight, Spiritfarer, A Little to the Left, and the demos for Beastieball and Capy Castaway, with Threads of Time, TUNIC, Boyfriend Dungeon, Kun’tewiktuk: A Mi’kmaw Adventure, and Goodbye Volcano High being titles firmly on our radar (and that belong on your wishlist!). Let’s check out Tails by the Foxfire’s full top 10 Canadian-made video games of 2026!

Top 2 Canadian Video Games we Played on Canada Day, 2026

1. South of Midnight by Compulsion Games – Montreal, QC

I fondly refer to South of Midnight by Compulsion Games as ‘Alice: Madness Returns meets The Witcher meets the Deep South’. We finished the game in about 11 hours. That is, we ravenously devoured South of Midnight in about 2 days, because we couldn’t get enough of its southern charm, its richly-woven tapestry of tragedy and hope, and its unflinching treatment of difficult topics like child abuse and overcoming loss: that is, painfully human struggles interlinked with a theme of legacy, of the choices people made to survive, and how monsters are made, all narrated with storybook framing between each chapter and layered with dynamic musical scores that evolve into boss battle themes to offer a new perspective. We’ll be listening to the soundtrack, inspecting every lyric and enjoying those earworms, because they add a vital dimension to the game’s story and, much like Aerosmith, we don’t want to miss a thing.

Even when combat felt clunky or overwhelming, or the story needed Hazel to be frustratingly blinded by her own perception of a situation rather than the truth in front of her, we couldn’t stop hanging on every moment of South of Midnight’s award-winning tale and found it to be nothing short of phenomenal aside from some difficulties with the gameplay for certain platforming puzzles and combat encounters.

Play it, love it, and support Compulsion Studios now if you want more immersive, characterful art pieces like this, before we lose them to the ceaselessly rising tide of misguided layoffs and studio closures.

2. Spiritfarer by Thunder Lotus – Montreal, QC

This one got me. Because of course it did: it gets everybody eventually, as I understand it. Spiritfarer by Thunder Lotus puts you in control of Stella and her cat Daffodil: the newest Spiritfarers who receive the Everlight from legendary afterlife ferryman Charon before he passes on. As Stella, you’ll take possession of a ship which you’ll improve over time with size and navigation upgrades, as well as amenities like personal quarters, manufacturing rooms for metal & fabric, an orchard, a farm, and more. As you meet spirits, they’ll have requests: feed them certain food, build or upgrade certain rooms, travel to certain locations. Your job is to fulfill these requests as best as you can, and help the spirits face the matters troubling them so that they can finally move on through to be at peace on the other side of the Everdoor. You will cry, probably (I know I did), but your heart will feel fuller for having known them.

3. A Little to the Left by Max Inferno – Halifax, NS

Developed right here in my stomping grounds of Halifax, Nova Scotia, A Little to the Left by Max Inferno presents you with a broad selection of organization puzzles, many of which have multiple possible solutions to keep you busy. The idea and art style of this one really speaks to me, and I find it’s best enjoyed in short bursts. You’ll organize bookshelves, straighten paintings, plan schedules based on a pre-existing pattern… and be terrorized by the resident cat who won’t hesitate to mess up your hard work for a bit of attention. That last part is… unfortunate, as I love puzzles and I love cats, but sadly the two do not really mix, as many of us know. Despite that though, A Little to the Left is still good fun and something I’d readily recommend, just perhaps not for while you’re stressed.

7 More Canadian Video Games on Our Radar in 2026

Along with the games we enjoyed to the fullest this Canada Day, we also discovered 7 more fantastic titles to be excited about. Check out these gems from Canadian studios and make sure to add them to your wishlist to show the devs some love!

1. Beastieball by Wishes Unlimited – Vancouver, BC

Do you like volleyball? Do you like creature capture games? Try Beastieball by Wishes Unlimited, which puts you in the sneakers of a beastieball coach! Travel, meet beasties, challenge them to volleyball-like matches, and recruit them to your lineup by offering them a jersey. It’s funny, it’s engaging (even for non-sportsball heads like me) and features an art style that reminds me of the Scott Pilgrim comics: another beloved Canadian IP!

2. Capy Castaway by Kitten Cup Studio – Toronto, ON

Following a flood that swept several animals away from their homes, Capy Castaway by Kitten Cup Studio puts you in control of a capybara and crow duo (control Capy with the left stick and Corvi with the right if playing solo, or team up with a friend!) as they explore a vibrant island, meet new friends, and complete puzzles. For instance, in the demo, we helped a young calf arrange a bouquet for her pregnant mother. It’s completely cute, and catering to those of us who enjoy funny hats, you can also pick basically everything up and stack it on your head as a unique twist on an inventory system.

3. Threads of Time by Riyo Games – Toronto, ON

I will take any and every opportunity to talk about Threads of Time by Riyo Games. In this love letter to Chrono Trigger and turn-based, pixel RPG classics like it, you’ll embark on an epic adventure across eras spanning from 12,000,000 BC all the way up to the apocalypse! Gather your heroes and protect the timeline with dynamic combat that lets you turn the tide with time on your side!

4. TUNIC by TUNIC Team – Halifax, NS

TUNIC by TUNIC Team is another title made right here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and it’s got a fox as its main character, so of course it belongs on this list. In this isometric action game, you’ll set out on an adventure in pursuit of hidden treasure, uncovering the lost legends and fearsome monsters an abandoned island has to offer. Trust in your wits and your sword, and piece together the biggest mystery of them all!

5. Boyfriend Dungeon by Kitfox Games – Montreal, QC

Boyfriend Dungeon by Kitfox Games had me in three simple but puzzling words: date your weapons. Yes, in this “shack-and-slash” adventure, you’ll discover broken weapons, repair them, and forge (heh) bonds with them in pursuit of friendship and love, all while on the trail of whichever villain is kidnapping them and leaving them broken in the dungeon. With 10 options to choose from, Boyfriend Dungeon promises some serious replay value, or at least plenty of options for locking down your dream date.

6. Kun’tewiktuk: A Mi’kmaw Adventure by Green Robot Studios – Cape Breton Island, NS

It’s not often I come across a game like Kun’tewiktuk: A Mi’kmaw Adventure by Green Robot Studios. Following wayward siblings Wasuek (Flower) and U’n (Fog), you’ll traverse the spirit realm in the hopes of finding each other again once more. Kun’tewiktuk: A Mi’kmaw Adventure features a story inspired by Mi’kmaw legend and folklore, promising an enchanting story-driven experience for this Canada Day weekend.

7. Goodbye Volcano High by KO_OP – Montreal, QC

Finally, we have the award-winning Goodbye Volcano High: a touching multiple-choice visual novel from KO_OP that follows Fang through their final year of high school. In addition to the character designs being wholly unique, Goodbye Volcano High tackles a relatable situation for us all: how to handle all the big, scary things you don’t know how to say. For Fang, this means putting their feelings into song in heartfelt rhythm-game sequences. I get Life is Strange and Lost Records: Bloom & Rage vibes from this immediately, so it’s high on my list of must-play games made right here in Canada.
