Tails by the Foxfire’s Sneak Peek at the Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter Demo
In a surprise move, Gungho recently dropped a 10-hour demo for Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter (though for me, it was more like a 15-hour demo because I love playing the completionist and exploring absolutely every area and sidequest!) with the full release speeding our way on September 17, 2026. I’ve been dying to know what happens next after that great whopping cliffhanger at the end of 1st Chapter, so I jumped on the demo this week to sate my appetite. Long story short, I was not disappointed: Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter picks up immediately after the ending of 1st Chapter and doesn’t mess you around with extraneous details and unfamiliar plot points. What’s more, fans will be happy to know that the battle system have been upgraded with brand new orbal arts and crafts, so there are even more possible combinations to play with in Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter than the already impressive range available in the first game.

What is Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter About?
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter picks up almost immediately after the first game’s cliffhanger and follows Estelle on her latest journey across Liberl. Along the way, she’ll balance Bracer duties with her search for Joshua and uncover the secrets of Ouroboros and its Enforcers.
I won’t say anything more here to avoid spoiling players who haven’t finished 1st Chapter yet, but I will say that Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter features a slow-burn story with a heavy emotional punch, and 2nd Chapter promises much of the same. The demo covers the prologue and 1st act, and the Estelle we meet in 2nd Chapter is one who is still recovering from the blows of the previous game. There’s joy here, but it’s at times understandably heavy. Like Yuna in Final Fantasy X-2, Estelle continues to choose joy and agency rather than dwelling on loss and change, and continues to push against misfortune on an adventure that feels precious, fleeting, and at times bittersweet. We see Estelle really start to step out of Joshua’s shadow and shine and mature in her own right, and she feels much less like a punchline or like she’s spending the game playing second string for it (which those who read my Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter review will remember was one of my very few gripes with the first game). We love to see it!

How Does Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter Improve Upon the First Remake’s Formula?
Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter takes everything that worked about the 1st Chapter remake (its clean 3D anime art style, dynamic and variable action/turn-based combat, remastered soundtrack, and intuitive Orbal stat & ability configuration system, to name a few) and levels it up for the sequel, adding brand new arts & crafts for you to unleash in combat, new moves, refined turn-based combat quality of life changes, new tracks and locations amongst the familiar sounds and places that feel like coming home, new costumes, and new characters Estelle will meet on this new adventure. The scriptwriting still feels fresh even during the slow, safe moments, and not to be overlooked is Trails’ ability to make me laugh out loud in those perfectly placed moments of humour.
Verdict: Is Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter’s Demo Worth Playing?
Though the trailer was advertised as being 10 hours long, I took my time exploring every nook and cranny of Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter and played for about 15 hours total, which likely tells you something about how much there is to do… or how slowly I play games. My thorough playstyle aside, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter delivers in its very generous demo with a whole two arcs from its engaging main story campaign, a handful of sidequests from the Bracer guild, a choice of route midway through, three dungeons, and of course, plenty of delicious-looking food to make (that will inspire you to cook ALL of it, in-game and IRL if you’re a foodie like me!). All that to say, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter‘s demo is definitely worth it and gives you a complete overview of what to expect when the full game releases on September 17th. I was excited about 2nd Chapter as soon as it was announced, but playing the 2nd Chapter demo really whet my appetite and got me chomping at the bit to find out what happens next!
Do You Need to Play Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter or Can You Start with 2nd Chapter?
Didn’t play the first Trails in the Sky remake and don’t feel like jumping on a playthrough before 2nd Chapter comes out? You do you (though you’ll be missing out on some really fun moments, character backgrounds, and a beautiful RPG, so I implore you not to skip it!): the Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter demo is still worth it, in my opinion, as it starts out by offering you a quick story recap so you can dive straight into the second game rather than playing through the first and worrying about spoilers. What’s more, Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter has all the helpful tutorials new players need to find their feet in overworld exploration and combat, so you’ll feel right at home even if you’re brand new. Admittedly, though, I found some of these tutorials felt a little hand-holdy for me personally and tended to get in the way after a while, since I still had the 1st Chapter mechanics still fresh in my mind.
